CBS News is reporting that the billions US taxpayers have funneled into Ukraine have allowed the bar scene in Kyiv to flourish – there are now more bars and nightclubs in the capital than before the war began. All this despite the fact that one week into Russia’s invasion, Ukraine banned the sale of alcohol. Today, many areas near bordering countries and sensitive equipment are still dry.
Despite the missiles, Ukraine’s nightlife is rocking. Bars and clubs are full. In fact there are now more bars and restaurants open in the capital city than there were before the start of Russia’s invasion.
In Kharkiv, not far from the Russian border in eastern Ukraine, and within easy reach of missiles and airstrikes, the story is the same.
And while we don’t begrudge the poor saps a bit of fun while they keep one eye on the sky for incoming missiles, we can’t help wonder when America’s homeless, working poor, veterans and fixed-income seniors will get enough resources together to go out and spend some money on having such a good time.
